"The main barrier for 99% of people is the fear of themselves - of their own potential— they doubt their ability to succeed and feel a distance from the image of who they aspire to be, often resulting in a lack of pride in themselves."

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Dee is a passionate advocate for financial literacy, driven by her own journey through financial challenges. Born and raised in Italy with Cameroonian origins, she faced years of uncertainty, living paycheck to paycheck and struggling with impulsive spending. With no financial education or guidance from her family, discussions about money were almost non-existent in her household. When she turned 19 and left home for university, Dee encountered the harsh realities of managing finances on her own, which led to years of hardship.

Recognising the urgent need for change, Dee enrolled in a financial literacy course to become a Certified Financial Literacy Professional. Armed with the knowledge and tools necessary to transform her financial situation, she was determined to build a secure future not only for herself but also for her five children. Understanding the importance of financial education, Dee taught her teenage daughter how to set up her finances before starting university, allowing her to enjoy a fulfilling college experience without the burden of financial stress.

As she shared her newfound knowledge with close family and friends, Dee discovered that many of them faced similar challenges. Although many of them had take the proactive approach of wanting to learn and prioritise financial stability, they often found that financial advice from social media was not completely relatable to their personal circumstances.

When growing up Dee noticed a trend within her community that caught her attention —individuals frequently sending money back to ‘home’ while grappling with their own financial struggles. Taking on personal loans or credit card debt to sustain a lifestyle they cannot afford has become a common aspect of the “flashing wealth culture.”

Living with high debts is normalised, with many buying cars, phones, designer fashion, and the latest tech just to appear successful to family and friends back home. Many felt a pressure to appear wealthy despite their reality. There’s a pervasive belief that if one is living in a Western country and not wealthy, they are viewed as a failure. Additionally, many feel the pressure of constantly having to help financially, even if they are struggling themselves, often leading to a reluctance to admit they are facing financial challenges. This can jeopardise relationships, particularly for those who are married or in couples and are trying to build a future for their own family.

Additionally, Dee observed people building homes back ‘home’ while struggling to maintain a decent lifestyle where they currently reside. Many work around the clock just to cover both the costs of building their houses and their living expenses, leading to a lifestyle that often prevents them from taking holidays or spending quality family time together. As a result, they find themselves working tirelessly until retirement, only to realise they haven’t truly enjoyed the fruits of their labor.
